Production Chef

Posted - 11th January 2022

We have an exciting new opportunity to join our team of expert pie-makers as a Production Chef. This role calls for someone who is super organised, proactive, and a real team player. Production in The Bakery is as you would expect, a well-oiled machine with tried and tested processes. Our perfect Production Chef will slot in with ease and come with the skills needed to react and adapt quickly when demand goes pie high.

Every person at Clive’s is vitally important, but this role really is at the core of the business – the kitchen. It’s where all the magic happens. You’ll be responsible for making our scrumptious mixes, managing recipes, ingredients and ensuring every single product we make is a parcel of pure plant-based joy! You’ll support our Chef Supervisor in guiding our fantastic team of kitchen staff, so we’re looking for someone with great people skills and a collaborative way of working.

We are on the lookout for someone who has proven experience working as a chef in a kitchen, catering or food production/manufacturing. Though rest assured we’ll be on hand to get you up to speed with ‘the Clive’s way’. A passion for food is a must, and an interest in vegan, non-GMO, organic products is a plus, but not essential (either way we’re sure you’ll fall in love with our food!)

Pie-oneering qualities we’re looking for:

  • A passion for food
  • Fantastic communicator
  • Great team player
  • Enthusiastic, energetic and dedicated
  • Self-motivated

HOURS – Sunday-Thursday 08.00-finish (18.00 ish) YIPPEE, no split shifts!

Here at Clive’s we are incredibly proud of our team, and making sure they feel happy and supported is our number one priority. A big part of this is making sure they are paid fairly for the brilliant work they do, which is why we’re a Real Living Wage Employer. We are one of thousands of businesses who have contributed to 20 years of history doing right by workers and families. We provide year-round jobs and as a Real Living Wage employer, we pay a minimum of £9.90 per hour (and you get a free pie for lunch!)

In 2020, after 30 years of baking from an old woollen mill in Buckfastleigh, we relocated to a new, larger home in Dartmouth. Following a total refit, we moved into ‘The Bakery’ where all the pie-making magic now happens, which is nestled in the heart of the Devon countryside and surrounded by rolling hills. We’ve even got a spectacular view of the stunning River Dart, which is right on our doorstep. Click here to see where we are on Google Maps.

Meet some of the team: (Left): Our brilliant Quality Manager Carlos, (Middle) Bakery Assistant Extraordinaire Lin, (Right) And our ever innovative Kitchen Assistant Harry

Lin Riseley from Dartmouth works with us as a Bakery Assistant: Lin said, “My role at Clive’s is totally different to anything I’ve done before, and I love it. The hours are good, the people are great and I like how much variety there is day-to-day. In the time that I’ve been here I’ve learnt so much and really feel like I’ve progressed.”

Harry Marshall, who’s vegetarian is a Clive’s Kitchen Assistant said, “Working at Clive’s has enabled me to grow in an area I’m really interested in. The bit I love most about my job is helping to create new products, like developing the seitan that goes in our recently launch puff pie range.”

We exude POSITIVITY and always act with INTEGRITY and HONESTY to deliver super tasty, QUALITY food that’s made with love. It means our glass is always half full, and we get ridiculously excited about planty food! We never, ever compromise on our principles. We’re totally open when it comes to talking about where we are on our journey towards doing things better, and our whole team is super proud of everything we do and make.

Today our Chief Plant Pioneer is the brilliant Esther Pearson who is the queen of plant positivity and always full of beans. Here Esther is with Clive himself!

Wondering how it all started? Well, Clive’s was founded in 1986 by Devonshire foodie Clive Lowe, who began selling the bakery’s signature ‘Creamy Mushroom Pie’ from the back of his bicycle. Clive has long since retired, but his original ethos and can-do attitude lives on in all of us. We believe in the positivity of plant-based eating and the benefits it brings to planet welfare. Our vision is for healthy and happy people and planet – one that inspires us to make our food the way that we do. By sourcing ingredients from like-minded suppliers, who care just as much about the planet as we do. Creating delicious recipes and flavour combinations, that push the boundaries of traditional plant-based eating, and by always putting the planet first, choosing 100% recyclable, plastic-free packaging for all our products.

To find out more about the delicious bakes we do, click here to see our full product range. We sell these to major retailers such as WaitroseMorrisons, Abel & Cole and Ocado, as well as numerous independent health food shops up and down the country.

Just like the beautifully unique plants that go into our pies, we celebrate diversity here at Clive’s. We believe in equal opportunities for all and pride ourselves on having an inclusive workplace where everyone can be themselves and succeed as part of a welcoming, passionate and hardworking team.

We have grand plans for the future, and to make them a reality we need more brilliant people to join our pie-oneering team! If our values strike a chord with you, and you want to be part of a vibrant, growing and ambitious business – please send us an email (with a copy of your CV if you have one) to We look forward to hearing from you!
