Clive’s is the home of truly tasty organic “free from” foods – we make yummy gluten free pies from our Bakery situated on the top floor of a converted woollen mill in Buckfastleigh, South Devon. Nearly all the pies are vegan, and we've just added a new range of vegan tarts into the Clive's family. Our other products include a vegan pasty and roll, a gluten free vegan nut roast, delicious vegan ready meals, and a range of gluten free cakes.
Everything we do is organic and vegetarian (free from meat), and free from all artificial flavours and preservatives. The majority of our products are suitable for those of you following a gluten and wheat free diet and nearly all are dairy and lactose free. Where we do use dairy – fresh organic mature cheddar in our Homity Pie; or eggs – fresh organic free range eggs in our luxury cakes, we insist on using Soil Association accredited suppliers to ensure the absolute best possible standards of animal welfare. Our palm oil supplier is RSPO certified, assuring us that the standard of production is sustainable, more information about RSPO certification can be found here . We source locally wherever possible and pack our food with the best ingredients.
We are a true testament that ‘free from’ foods in no way compromise taste or flavour, or your conscience if you're following a vegetarian, vegan or gluten free diet.
So who’s Clive and where did it all begin?
Clive started making vegetarian wholemeal pies in 1982, from a small domestic kitchen on the edge of Dartmoor. In 1986, Clive rented a small unit in a converted woollen mill in Buckfastleigh. He was baking about a hundred cheese and vegetable, and mushroom pies, that he distributed on his bike for the princely sum of 36p per pie! He’s a bit of a legend in this part of Devon, but like all good pie-makers, he’s now retired. We took over the business in 2003, expanded the range of gluten free products and fine-tuned our delicious recipes.
Clive's is still based in the same converted woollen mill, and continue to make pies and cakes with care, love and attention. The fundamental principles of fresh local organic ingredients, hand prepared in our own kitchen, is the cornerstone of what we’re about. We don’t mass-produce. Everything is hand made in small batches to ensure the best quality.
We’re lucky to be located in one of the most beautiful and luscious parts of the country – Dartmoor and the South Hams are both areas of outstanding natural beauty. We do everything we can to minimise our environmental impact through local sourcing of ingredients, waste recycling (tins, cardboard, plastic, film and vegetable peelings), using recyclable packaging and the recent installation of a heat recovery unit to heat our hot water from the waste heat generated from our chillers and freezers.
